Product Review: Shave Secret

Do you long for a close, smooth shave? Are you un-thrilled by the rust ring in your shower from your shaving cream can? Do you have hours of your life available to dedicate to cleaning your razors out with an embroidery needle?
***

Then Shave Secret is for you!
I got a sample of shave secret in my packet from the Mardi Gras Marathon. It's basically an oil you rub on your skin before shaving instead of using shaving cream. The pros? You only use a few drops, so it lasts for ages, and you get an amazingly smooth shave, irritation free. The cons? It makes your razor yucky. It fills with gunk. It's ok if you don't mind picking oil-skin-hair cement out of your razor with a needle, but if that's not how you want to spend your time, skip it.
I am on the fence about buying this now that I've finally finished the sample. I loved the close shave (I'm used to bristles), but having to clean your razor after every few uses is a little annoying.

  1. I use cheap hair conditioner to shave my legs. My daughter taught me that little trick.

  2. I used Shave Secret and it actually created a lot of redness and irritation as well as in-grown hairs. When I just used water with my electric shaver I didn't get that. Not sure if I am allergic to something in the oil or perhaps it just got a little too close.

  3. It works well if you use a de razor or a straight razor.

  4. Shaving oil is the best thing to ever happen to my sensitive face. But your complaint about gunking up the razor is a non-issue, I think. I switched to a double-edged (butterfly) type razor. I picked one up at a flea-market for $15. Not only are the blades easy to clean (just pop them out and wipe them clean) but they are ridiculously cheap compared to replacement blades for my old Gillette Mach II. Even cheap double-edge blades from wal-mart perform excellent with shaving oil! Maybe you should try those cheap throw away razors if you don't like cleaning the blades. Only thing is they aren't too nice on the environment.

  5. I got a sample of this stuff in the Austin Marathon a couple of years ago. It was great to find a product that allowed me to get rid of shaving cream, which I truly loath. Then I got a bottle of Kind Shave Oil (www.kindshaving.com) as a birthday present last month from a fellow lover of the shave oils. I think this stuff is superior. It is a little less thick so it doesn't clog my razor, plus it has a minty effect that is awesome. Has anyone else tried this stuff out?

  6. Shave Secret is great! I've been shaving with it for over a year and haven't found its equal. At home I use it as a pre-shave with Van Dera Hagen shaving soap puck, silver tip badger brush, Edwin Jeager DE razor and Astra blades - with fantastic results. The puck and Shavers Secret are both available at Walmart and the DE razor and brush are both worth the investment. I also use SS by itself with throw-away razors at the health club with great results and I also use SS as an aftershave as well. Shaving is now quite enjoyable.

  7. I love the stuff. If you rinse your razor throughout the shave as stated, and then clean it at the end,the gunk problem is a non-issue.It will give you a very clean shave and no irritation unless you are one of the rare allergic to the natural oils.Big thumbs up for this product.

  8. I used a product in the early 1950s' called Whisker Wilt. It was great but later removed from the market due to skin irritation. Secret Shave reflects this problem.
