My new friend

I bought this online: foam roller, foam roller with ridges, and massage stick all in one. It was cheap-o, $30 including tax.

It's my new friend. Believe it or not I'd never used a foam roller before. But after the Publix marathon I borrowed my friend's set like this to use the massage stick. Hers wasn't all bendy like the Marathon Stick I owned, and I liked it better. I've been dreaming of it ever since, so when I saw this set I bought it.
I'm loving the foam roller (I have found new sore spots all over; I even rolled my lower back and it felt so good!) but I'm also enjoying this stiffer massage stick. I just could never get a deep enough massage out of the flexible Marathon Stick, especially on my hamstrings. So now the Stick goes on Ebay.

PS - I am now a real runner. I have a marathon plan and I own a foam roller. Bam!

Do you foam roll? Or use a stick, or tiger tail? Or just make small children walk around on you while you lie on your tummy?

  1. Oh my, having a foam roller/stick changed everything about running for me! Kristen (the other Little Runner) kept telling me about it, but I refused to believe in its magical healing powers. I have so many fewer niggles (or horcruxes as RoseRunner termed it) now...

I still foam roll on my quads, but now its not hard enough for my calves and butt/piriformis - I use a tennis ball for those bits! If you ever try it, be aware that you may break out into a cold sweat. It is intense.

Im thinking about the small child thing. Could be handy. I wonder how cheap they are...

  2. I don't have a foam roller or stick or anything. I DO have a smallish child, but he's not all that helpful...OR cheap.

I know I should get one. One of these days...

  3. So glad you finally became a real runner! All those ridiculously fast marathons you hammered out, before, were mere child's play. ;)
The only one of my kids small enough to walk on my back prefers jumping, to careful stepping. That was a painful experiment, to say the least. I stick with (and love) my foam roller, these days.

  4. LOL...I bought a foam roller a few months ago...I was working it like it was my j-o-b during my 50 miler training but not so much now...it did help though...so I have to be better about it. I have 2 other roller/massage things too that I got from Road Runner Sports...one I use for the bottom of my feet...the other I use like a rolling pin on whatever body part is sore. Happy rolling! :)

  5. oooooh that looks great!

I'm kinda almost embarrassed to admit that I don't have/have never used a foam roller before! (AND I don't have a training plan)..but all in due time. haha!

  6. That looks like a great tool! I have a GRID foam roller, and I try to use it for approximately 5 minutes after every run. I think it helps to relieve tight muscles.

  7. Ha! Love this...you make me laugh. Wow, Look at Gracie conforming!!! A plan and foam rolling...ha ha. next thing is that she will have a coach. :) I love my tiger tail!! We got them for hood to coast and I love love love it. Kids also walk on our back. And I have a blue foam roller but I don't really like it so much. Okay, off to do some rolling...thanks for the reminder. xo

  9. I vote that you keep the plan, and use the roller. so much talent, who knows what a "plan" will do for you. excited to watch the journey

I have a stick and a roller. I like the roller better, but think I need to upgrade to the grid one maybe. mine is cheap and it's a little warped. I should use it more often, but it does help when I'm sore and use it.

  10. I am like you; I never had one. But I got my brother a tiger tail and he happened to already have The Stick, so he gave me the stick. I love it. I don't really use it after running that much, but I use it on my neck after a long day at the computer.

  11. It's about time you got on the rolling train!! I just started using one with the nubby things on it, basically PVC pipe with the nubs on the outside - so much stiffer than the foam roller, I LOVE it. It hurts. I don't use it as often as I should, but when I do, it works wonders. Maybe this wil keep the pain away!

  12. I am a big believer in the stick and foam roller, although I need to start using them daily instead of just when something starts to ache. I like that yours is all in one, my kids like to play with mine and I am lucky to find one of them on a given day. Although I guess if it was all in one, I might never find it?
