Rubbing shoulders with the elites

One of the things I love about running is that you - and I, little ol' Gracie - can race the elites. You won't ever see a high school wrestler in the ring with an Olympian, or a 75 year old retired guy indulging his hobby by playing basketball against Lebron James. But last Saturday I raced a Kenyan who ran a 27:32 10k.

And then I met him, got his autograph on my bib, and Facebook friended him. Boom.

  1. I love this post, so true! I'd have to use the term "with" a bit more loosely, considering he'd be done before I even hit the 5k. =)

  2. I'll say too that this is one of the things I love about adventure racing. Getting to race the same race as the elite teams, seeing them out on the course, and having them recognize the back-of-pack teams as belonging out there too is pretty cool. Even more awesome? When a guy on an elite team liked my Facebook page. :)

How exciting! I would be too much of a wimp to even ask for an autograph.

  4. Awesome! It's kinda sad that the rest of the world doesn't know who these athletes are. I think it's awesome that he signed "Kenya" under his name. I'm gonna start doing that, and then when folks ask me why, I'll just say "man, you have no idea who I am do you?"

    1. Ah! I love that he wrote "Kenya" - as if we couldn't freakin' tell. But yes, I think we should start scrawling "Kenya" by our names and giving people supercilious sidelong glances if they question it.
