Luckily, I found a pretty good substitute in another Fruit of the Loom bra. It also starts at size 34, but it doesn't run as large as the other style, so a 34 fits me.
This bra is kind of awesome. It's 95% cotton and 5% spadex, which makes it cool and breathable but with enough stretch. It has this weird front closure going on, but I just ignore that and pull it over my head.
The front is lined and shirred for modesty, and the 34 fits like a typical small. The back is a racerback, with a vent to keep you cool. The bra comes down a little lower onto the abdomen than most, which makes me even more comfortable wearing it shirtless in the summer (I tend to be more modest, but all that goes out the window when it's 99F out).
I'm a big fan of cotton jog bras because I think they keep you a lot cooler than synthetic materials, and you don't have to worry about sweat-soaked clinging because they're already tight. But sometimes, cotton isn't study enough for a jog bra to do its job. These really do, though, and they're a great deal at 2 for $11.
Huge drawback: the bottom of the front closure chafes. I MUST use Body Glide in that spot - but that's not a big deal for me, since I always lube up at my bra band (it's a high-chafe area for me).
This has now moved up to my #2 bra. My number one is still my Coeur Sports bra, which has good coverage and two pockets, but for everyday wear, this cotton bra suits my needs just fine. And at that price, I didn't care that one of the two-pack had an unraveled seam that I had to stitch up. It was still a good deal!
I love all of your frugal posts! Maybe when I quit nursing I should check these out. Although actually with a front closure might be easy to nurse if needed (we are past that stage but I needed that months ago).
ReplyDeleteDo you wear a regular bra underneath or are you one of the lucky few who find that that's perfectly enough support? I always wear a good, firm, sports bra under my running tops because it's just too uncomfortable without. A little bit envious of those who don't.
ReplyDeleteJust this bra. It has enough support. I'd never be able to wear a shelf-bra top or anything - I'm a 32C or 34B depending on the bra; this bra is perfectly secure.
DeleteI just might have to try this one!! I'm always in the market for a good (not too pricey) sports bra! I once read sports bras are good for 1 year and then need replaced. Who comes up with this stuff? My guess a sports bra company. I've had mine much longer than that!
ReplyDeleteUh, I never replace mine unless they literally fall apart.
DeleteI too wear those Fruit of the Loom sports bras and am glad to read another blogger who does (heck, I'm glad to find a blogger who shops at Walmart since it seems like all the others have some specialty "service" for mail-ordering workout clothes *sigh*). I'm not well endowed so those bras have always worked for me but this one looks really neat, so I might have to check it out. I didn't realize they stopped making size 32 because the last time I bought some (in August), I got my size. Maybe my Walmart just wasn't out yet...
ReplyDeleteI have a harder time finding a good sports bra than I do the right running shoe. After consistently paying ~$50 for one that was more okay than others, I saw this post and thought "heck. why not?" Completely skeptical, but absolutely love them. Thank you so much for the recommendation.
ReplyDeleteHappy you liked them, too!
DeleteI've run for years in cheapo Target Champion sports bras and love them. Would love to try this Fruit of the Loom version but can't wear cotton up here in Alaska, since even in summer temps on the trails are cool enough to cause sweat chills. P.S. I get a lot of my running gear from eBay. It pleases me terribly to snag a bargain.
