Runner's knee!

Oh, no! My runner's knee is hanging around, so I am taking some time off in hopes that it goes away. Meanwhile, I am doing quad and hip strengthening (like always...), but any additional advice is very welcome.

It's weird that it feels ok after I warm up, but hurts when I'm inactive.
What does this mean for the marathon in February? Not sure. Chunks of time off when it should be peak week doesn't bode well for a long race, so I guess I will see how I recover and how long it takes. If I feel better but only have four days until the race, I will skip it. But if I can get a good couple of weeks in, I will probably be fine.

  1. Maybe not runner's knee? Mine would hurt when I run, not just sitting around. Do you do any yoga? I am convinced a combo of yoga and strength training has kept my runner's knee at bay (knock on wood).

    1. I'm bumping it up per your advice. I was doing it once a week.

  2. I've got my own knee issues right now. If my leg is unsupported and I try to go from straight to bent, searing pain in my knee. But no pain while running or otherwise. I'm hoping to hobble through the race. If you decide you want to approach it as a fun run, let's meet up. One of my running buddies has agreed to run the first half with me at about a 3:55 pace, and then we'll both reevaluate, and there's a good chance I'm going to slow down and enjoy since there's no hope of a PR or BQ at that point. Hope the time off helps your knee. I'm giving mine 4 days off (for Mardi Gras).

  3. My R knee started bothering me after my long run on Sunday. My chiropractor told me it was likely because of a tight IT band. I didn't realize how tight my IT band was until he started doing his ART magic on it. Yowzers!!!!! Made me almost tear up it hurt so bad. I was shocked because when I foam roll that area, it's not that uncomfortable. Having someone get in there with their fingers and dig at your fascia is a different story. Maybe you can get back in with your PT and see what he thinks? Your IT band might be the culprit as well.

  4. My left knee always hurts a little when I start running in the winter, but ALWAYS feels better after I run for a while. I wouldn't stress over it. Just keep stretching you hips and groin area on the inside of your leg by your hamstring. That seems to help me.

  5. Boo. The only time I've had runner's knee was back in 2006ish I think when I very first went back to running after several months of doing nothing. My knee swelled up to the size of a cantaloupe and I couldn't bend it. For me ice & rest were the only things that helped. It's never come back so I don't even know what the underlying cause was.

  6. A tight hip flexor may also be causing that. Stretch and foam roll the hell out of your hip flexor!
