My Little Free Library

I'm not normally a proponent of the Little Free Library, because really - libraries are already free.  But I've realized that there are situations in which the Little Free Library model - take a book, leave a book - is useful.
One of those situations is my workplace. Even though the main branch of the library is across the street from the hospital, many family members and even patients are not from New Orleans, and don't hold a library card. And many of them spend long, bored hours in bed or at a bedside that they could fill with reading.
Light reading for your hospital stay

So I started a Little Free Library in my pharmacy! I put the stack of books out last week, and already we've seen a nice turnover: four or five books taken; four or five donated. Hopefully it will make someone's stay at Tulane a little better!

  1. Nice!

The little free libraries make me smile. I don't ever take books from them, but it's fun to browse them to see what other people have offered.

  2. What a lovely idea. Hospitals can be such lonely, boring places but you don't ever have to be lonely or bored when you have a good book. I'm sure that lots of people will appreciate it.

  3. So cool! There are two on our Tuesday night group run route. Since I run with the stroller then, I stop and browse, picking up something that might pique my interest. And then if I'm home and find a book I'm ready to part with, I throw it in the stroller for drop-off!

    Love those little libraries!

  4. That's awesome that you started a little free library at work. I really like little free libraries as I like that people can pass on books to others in their neighborhoods. There is one in Phil's neighborhood but sadly, someone burned it down. :( Which is crazy because he lives in this nice, safe, cute neighborhood.

  6. This is such a great idea! Our patients are often in the hospital for a week/weeks at a time (hooray slow healing processes!), and I'm sure boredom comes into play. Only so many TV shows you can watch! Of course, I rarely see any of them reading, but that might just be the patient population I work with.
